Composed by Ferdinand [von] Hiller , 1811/10/24 (Frankfurt a.M).‒1885/05/11 (Köln). Ferdinand Hiller was something of a prodigy: public performances at the age of ten, early compositions at the age of twelve, friendship with Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn at thirteen, a student of Hummel’s from 14-16. From 1828‒1835, Hiller was a composition teacher at Coron’s School of Music in Paris. He returned to Frankfurt in 1836. He replaced Mendelssohn as conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, served as Kapellmeister of Düsseldorf, founded the music conservatory in Cologne. Composer of six operas, a violin concerto, three piano concertos and a Konzertstück, several quartets for string (and sometimes piano), two piano sonatas, at least two cello sonatas, and at least four symphonies (among many smaller works). His most famous pupil was probably Max Bruch.
